New ELSE Tri-Regional Officials Secretary – Julie Roe

Barbara Abbott, Chair of the ELSE Tri-Region Officials Group (ELSE TROG), has asked us to let her fellow SEOAO members know that, following the call for nominations and an assessment process, Julie Roe will be taking up the mantel of the ELSE TROG Officials Secretary in August (after the Commonwealth Games).

Barbara thanks Dave Vidler, who recently resigned from this role in order to take up the post of National Officials Secretary, for his hard work over many years.

Barbara also asks all Level 3 and 4 officials to help Julie with one of her early tasks by submitting our (Level 3 and 4) Records of Experience for 2021/2022  (with summary information on number of officiating days per discipline) by the due date of 30th September. Q. What is ELSE? What is a Tri-Region?

  • ELSE stands for East, London and South East. It is one of ..... 3 .... Tri-Regions, the others being North and Midlands & South West. The SEAA aligns with the ELSE region. I am sure there is a map somewhere!
  • The three English TROGs work alongside equivalent in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, collectively known as the "Tri Region and National Groups" or TRNGs.
  • In England the Tri Regional Groups have a role in coordinating, and supporting the progression of, officials.

(Note that, as of July it still needs updating for Julie's appointment).

 

The important thing to remember is that all the people "working" within the Tri-Regional structure are volunteer officials, officiating alongside you week in, week out and living normal lives as well, outside of athletics.

 

Q. What's the difference between the ELSE TRNG Officials Secretary and the Southern Region Upgrading Secretary?

Both roles are part of the same structure, attending the ELSE TROG meetings.

In practical terms the Officials Secretary (Julie Roe):

  • is the point of contact between UKA, EA  and the SEAA and the ELSE TROG for officials' appointments to national and regional events;
  • reviews the submitted Records of Experience from Level 3 and 4 to understand officials' experience and suitability for events; and
  • arranges and keeps minutes of the ELSE meetings.

This role is administrative, reviewing applications to ensure that they are complete before sending for assessment, answering queries from officials about upgrading and sending out reminders about the process.
